Why is my dryer not heating?
The answer depends on the dryer type. On electric vented dryers, the most common cause is a failed heating element, a blown thermal fuse, or a defective cycling thermostat. On gas dryers, it's typically a worn igniter, a failed gas valve solenoid, or a defective flame sensor. On heat pump dryers, "not heating" usually means a failing compressor, a clogged evaporator or condenser coil, or a refrigerant issue. Each type requires a fundamentally different diagnostic approach.
Why does my dryer take so long to dry clothes?
On vented dryers, the most common cause is a clogged or partially blocked exhaust vent — lint builds up in the duct over time and restricts airflow. On heat pump dryers, a dirty condenser or evaporator coil is usually responsible — these coils collect lint and dust inside the machine and need periodic cleaning. We check the airflow path, clean or clear any obstructions, and test drying performance before leaving.
What is a heat pump dryer and how is it different?
A heat pump dryer uses a closed-loop refrigeration cycle to dry clothes instead of a heating element and exhaust vent. A compressor circulates refrigerant through an evaporator (which extracts moisture from the air) and a condenser (which reheats the dried air). No hot air is vented outside, which means no external vent is needed. Is it safe to keep using my gas dryer if it smells like gas?
No. If you smell gas near your dryer, turn it off, do not use any electrical switches, open windows, and leave the area. Call your gas utility first to confirm the supply line is safe. Then schedule a repair — the source is typically a failed gas valve seal, a loose connection behind the unit, or a cracked gas valve that we can diagnose and fix on-site.
Why is my ventless dryer showing a full condensate tank?
Ventless dryers collect extracted moisture in either a removable tank or pump it out through a drain hose. When the "tank full" indicator lights up too frequently or the dryer stops mid-cycle, the cause is typically a clogged condensate pump, a blocked drain hose, or a faulty level sensor. On Miele and Bosch models, the condensate pump can also fail electrically — the motor runs but doesn't move water.
How often should dryer vents be cleaned?
For vented dryers (gas and electric), the exhaust duct from the dryer to the outside vent cap should be cleaned at least once a year — more frequently if the duct is long, has multiple bends, or serves a heavily used dryer. Lint buildup in the vent is the leading cause of dryer fires and the most common reason a dryer takes too long to dry.
